The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has warned the public of a scam inviting people to tender on its contracts.
This comes as National Treasury’s centralised eTender portal remains offline, with no indication as to when the system will be restored.
Last month, ITWeb reported the portal had crashed following problems with the Government Printing Works’ eGazette publishing system, which resulted in the National Tender Bulletin going unpublished since January.
In a statement issued today, Sanral asserts that the invitation to tender is fraudulent and did not legitimately emanate from the agency.
“The invitations to tender are made in the name of a Ms Wendy Mhlanzi, supposedly an employee of our supply chain management department. No such individual works for or is employed by Sanral,” says Vusi Mona, general manager of communications.
Sanral adds that the telephone and fax numbers, as well as the e-mail address used, are also incorrect, and are not its official contact details.
The roads agency further points out that the public should be aware that Sanral e-mail addresses always include ‘NRA’, noting it’s the abbreviation for National Roads Agency.
According to Sanral, the fake e-mail address is listed as XXXXX@nra-agency.co.za.
“We apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused, and we assure members of the public that we are investigating this matter,” says Mona.
