Uganda's director of public prosecutions (DPP) has withdrawn charges related to tax evasion against a number of MTN Uganda executives, including MTN CEO and president, Sifiso Dabengwa.

In addition to Dabengwa, accused executives were Charles Mbire, Mazen Mrou'e, Khumo Shuenyane, Nosipho Molope, Christian de Faria, Ignatius Sehoole, Nozipho-January Bardill, Anthony Mutyaba Katamba, Francois Tefouet, Mervyn Immelman, Mike Blackburn, and Nigel Williams.

This comes after an ex-employee of MTN Uganda, Naphtali Were, last year accused his former employer's senior management and directors of the board of tax evasion. Were had been dismissed earlier in the year for allegedly having embezzled $4.1 million from the company.

In December, a judge in the criminal division of the High Court of Uganda declared the criminal summons alleging tax evasion null and void, and the case was transferred to the DPP.

The DPP's decision to withdraw the case, based on lack of evidence, brings the issue of tax allegations against the cellular giant to an end.
