What makes LoRaWAN stand out above the rest

Johannesburg, 01 Jul 2021

Many RF protocols are widely used, such as Bluetooth, ZigBee and WiFi, that have their place in the IOT ecosystem. Like every technology though, they have restrictions, such as a limited range that requires multiple intermediate hops that carry device data traffic to its ultimate destination, the cloud. These protocols all need some form of powered solution to be a bridge between the data to the cloud.

What makes LoRa stand above the rest?

LoRaWAN is a low power, long-range wide area network (LPWAN) specification intended for wireless battery-operated things in regional, national or global networks, utilising centralised managed gateways that may be located kilometres apart. These gateways provide broad coverage over large geographical areas.

The low cost of deploying narrowband signalling together with low-cost RF modules means that LoRaWAN has a significant cost advantage. LoRa dominates as the leading long-range, low power connectivity protocol when long-lasting battery life is a necessity. Providing the advantage of spread spectrum modulation and signalling while reducing the data rate to the minimum required level. Typical current consumption while transmitting or receiving is a few tens of milliamperes, compared to hundreds of milliamperes for 2G or 3G modules – hence these solutions typically need to be connected to the power grid.

LoRa is a complementary solution to any other IOT network solution that will add value and cut costs in your digitisation of things journey.

If you are not yet using LoRaWAN, is it not time to connect now? Step into the future of endless possibilities with Comsol.
