Cisco's infrastructure as code partnership to speed and scale application deployment

Cisco's strategic partnership with HashiCorp brings the benefits of infrastructure as code (IaC) automation to hybrid cloud environments in a solution that is both powerful and simple.

This is according to Todd Nightingale, Cisco's SVP and GM, Enterprise Networking and Cloud.

With IaC, developers can manage physical infrastructure as software and deploy with unprecedented speed.

Speaking at the Cisco Live 2021 virtual conference, Nightingale said that HashiCorp's Terraform system is the “pre-eminent IaC tool and now all of our customers can leverage it and have it fully integrated into their Intersight experience”.

He described Intersight as “the world's simplest hybrid cloud platform, delivering intelligent automation and orchestration for application and infrastructure across public and private cloud”.

“Our users love the simplicity and the power of Intersight, and more and more of those users are embracing a new automation strategy, infrastructure as code: the ability to deploy hundreds, thousands of containers; and hundreds of workloads in just a few lines of code is incredibly, incredibly powerfully. With IaC, developers can manage physical infrastructure as software and deploy with unprecedented speed,” he said.

In a demonstration, Nightingale used Cloud Orchestrator in the Intersight platform to deploy a 'massive' private cloud including compute, storage, networking and any other resources using workflow automation and Cisco Nexus dashboard.

“This is incredibly important because this gives us a very powerful graphical interface to develop repeatable workflows that can radically simplify the way we deploy hybrid cloud. And by integrating with Cisco Nexus dashboard it can give us a simple way to deploy not just the compute infrastructure but the networking infrastructure which allows secure segmentation and connectivity for our clusters.”

He continued: “Now that I have used Cloud Orchestrator and my hardware is provisioned, it's available for the DevOps team. They can start to deploy and that is where this partnership comes into play. Thanks to integration between Intersight and HashiCorp, DevOps teams can now use their software development tools and Terraform code to deploy their applications with speed and scale.”

Cisco announced the partnership with the San Franciso-based HashiCorp in the days leading up to its virtual conference, calling it “a significant leap forward in hybrid cloud automation”. Its Intersight Service for Terraform integrates with Terraform Cloud Business, with single sign-on authentication and secure on-premise access.

“Integrations like this enable Intersight customers to enjoy end-to-end automation, which drives governance and consistency for self-service capabilities,” said Kaustubh Das, VP and GM for Cisco’s Cloud and Compute business.

With a cloud-agnostic approach and support for an ecosystem of third-party tooling, Intersight allows developers and other IT teams to continue using the platforms and software of their choice without disruption. This, said Das, enables developers and application teams to increase their overall agility and reduces time to market.
