If you are one of the many companies planning to upgrade your Internet bandwidth to get better cloud application performance, you are likely to be very disappointed. Not only will you have increased your Internet cost, but you will still be experiencing the same slow application speeds as before.
So says Stuart Hardy, Chief Marketing Officer at Accelerate Networks. Stuart has spoken to over 30 corporate companies within the last 60 days that are frustrated with application performance after upgrading their Internet. He believes the issue can be attributed to the ISP, or respective sales person, misunderstanding the underlying cause of poor cloud application performance and incorrectly positioning more Internet as the solution.
"We see this as a common problem, but the most challenging ones include customers moving onto expensive networks like Express Route, Direct Connect and MPLS and still experiencing the same performance problem to cloud. These are long-term and very expensive mistakes due to bad advice. In almost all cases of poor global cloud application performance the issue has nothing to do with the amount of bandwidth you have, but the level of latency and packet loss you are exposed to. As a result, we often see the same performance issues solved with up to 70% less bandwidth" says Stuart.
'Accelerate' firmly believes that optimisation is the key to resolving application performance because it addresses the real issue of latency and erratic Internet quality. Even when moving to dedicated network designs like Express Route and Direct Connect, which have less latency and are more stable, 90% of the latency issues remain unchanged. In many cases customers are spending considerably more on these network services with little benefit.

"Most ISP's either don't understand the issues of latency and packet loss, or position only services that will benefit their own interests, like increasing Internet. We resolved a serious issue for a SA Property Fund on SharePoint with a 30 Mbps accelerated Internet service, after they could not get the performance they needed from a 150 Mbps Broadband connection. We measured the performance improvement was 20x faster over much less bandwidth. Throwing bandwidth at the problem is simply not the answer".
Stuart believes that testing acceleration and optimisation first is beneficial as it's a relatively simple and obligation-free process where customers can measure the benefits before making a commitment.
